Every year on 22 July Christians commemorate Mary Magdalene. She was present at the crucifixion of Christ and was one of the first to know about His Resurrection.
People call this holiday Mary’s Day, Myrrh-bearer, Marya Berry. Young girls on this day appealed to the saint with a prayer to give them beauty. They also collected the morning dew in silverware to wash it. In ancient times, it was believed that such a ritual gave the face a blush and health to the skin.
On this day, it was also a tradition to wake up early and shake off the dew from plants. It was believed that it had a deleterious effect on them. On this day cattle were kept in stalls. Housekeepers on the holiday were engaged in the preparation of berries – boiled compotes and jam.
What should not be done on this day
- It is not allowed to wish others evil, to swear profanely, to wish someone evil and to think about bad things.
- Women are not allowed to work hard, especially in the vegetable garden and in the field.
- According to beliefs today during a thunderstorm one should not leave windows and doors open – at this time unclean forces can enter the house.
- It is not recommended to solve financial problems, take money on credit, etc.
On a clear and sunny Mary’s Day, it is advised to let in as much sunlight as possible – the more of it there is in the house, the more wealth and prosperity there will be.
