For two millennia, her image has inspired artists and theologians, giving rise to many interpretations and versions of her biography. Her life has been the subject of numerous Renaissance and Classical paintings, literary works and films. There are more than 20 world-famous paintings dedicated to Mary Magdalene. And on 22 July Orthodox believers honour Mary Magdalene!
According to Church legend, the saint was born in the town of Magdala, which is on the shore of Lake Genisaret in Galilee. She was extremely beautiful, but led a sinful life – although this part of the biography is still controversial. After Jesus interceded on her behalf and cast seven demons out of Mary, she completely changed her life, dedicating it to faith and service to the Lord.
St Mary Magdalene followed Christ unswervingly, showing sincere care and devotion. She was by his side during his crucifixion, together with the Blessed Virgin Mary, sharing her pain and sorrow.
On Easter, together with the other women myrrh-bearers, Mary went to the tomb of Jesus to anoint his body with incense. it was she who first came to the tomb, found it empty and witnessed the resurrection of the Saviour.
At Christ’s command, she announced His Resurrection to the world – That is why the Church honours her as an Equal Apostle.
