Meta unveiled Aria Gen 2: smart glasses for AR and AI research

Meta has shared new details about the second generation of its experimental Aria Gen 2 smart glasses, which are designed as a research platform to explore augmented reality, artificial intelligence and robotics. These glasses have a compact frame and feature advanced technologies that could later become part of consumer devices.

Among the key innovations is an eye-tracking system capable of capturing gaze direction, blinking and pupil position. Meta explains that this allows for a more accurate understanding of the user’s visual attention and intentions, which opens up new horizons in digital interaction.

The first generation of Aria appeared back in 2020 and was used exclusively for research purposes. In February 2025, the company presented Aria Gen 2, emphasising that these glasses will be the basis for future innovation and the development of a new computing platform.

Aria Gen 2 are equipped with four computer vision cameras that enable real-time tracking of hands and other objects in three-dimensional space. This opens up possibilities for ultra-precise actions such as controlling robotic systems. A photoplethysmography sensor is embedded in the bridge of the nose to measure heart rate, as well as a contact microphone that provides high-quality sound even in noisy environments. There is also a light sensor that allows the glasses to adapt to different conditions, indoors or outdoors.

The device has flexible arms, weighs 75 grams and is available in eight sizes. During this year, Meta will open registration for researchers who want to work with the Aria Gen 2.The company is actively developing the smart eyewear business-in particular, it has released the commercially available Ray-Ban Meta, is working on the Orion augmented reality model, and is rumoured to be collaborating with the Oakley brand (EssilorLuxottica) on new products. A premium Hypernova model with an integrated display is on the horizon.
