Slovenia held parliamentary elections on 22 March – according to exit polls, the ruling Freedom Movement led by Prime Minister Robert Golob is in the lead.
The results of the exitpoll “median” are as follows:
- “Movement Freedom” – 29.9 per cent (30 MPs)
- Slovenian Democratic Party-27.5 per cent (27 MPs)
- “New Slovenia – 9.4 per cent (9 MPs).
- Social Democrats-6.7 per cent (6 deputies)
- Left-Green Bloc-6.3 per cent (6 deputies)
- Democrats-5.9 per cent (5 deputies)
- “Pravda” – 5.2% (5 deputies).
Local media say that two political forces have a chance of forming a government: the ruling Svoboda Movement, led by Prime Minister Robert Golob, and the opposition right-wing Slovenian Democratic Party (SDP), whose leader is Janez Janša.
None of the parties will be able to form a parliamentary majority on their own, so they will have to turn to other political forces that make it into parliament. In the case of the Freedom Movement, it will most likely be about its current partners: the Left-Green bloc and the Social Democrats.
Slovenian President Natasa Pirc Musar said she would nominate the candidate who first receives at least 46 votes of support in parliament.
