Potato production in Ukraine will exceed food requirements by more than five times

Potato production in Ukraine in 2026 is expected to reach around 12.5 million tonnes, which will be sufficient to meet domestic food needs, according to the press office of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food, citing Minister Taras Vysotskyi.

“Potato production this year is expected to total around 12.5 million tonnes. The available volume is more than sufficient for the domestic market. The population consumes a maximum of 2–2.5 million tonnes per year. The remainder of the harvest is traditionally used as seed potatoes and for animal feed,” noted Vysotsky.

According to Vysotsky, around 400 specialised enterprises grow potatoes as a commercial crop in Ukraine, covering a total area of approximately 60,000 hectares. The majority of the crop is traditionally grown on private households for personal consumption.

According to the State Statistics Service, the average selling price of potatoes currently stands at around 14 UAH per kilogramme. Over the past week, it has fallen by 5 per cent, and over the past month by 15 per cent; in some places, purchase prices have dropped to 12 UAH per kilogramme.

The final figures for potato production will be available once the harvest is complete, the ministry noted.
