In a recent statement, former US President Donald Trump made a rather bold claim that Ukraine and Russia had allegedly reached an agreement to refrain from attacking each other’s energy infrastructure. According to Trump, who posted this on his social media account, both sides had agreed to this, although the details and mechanisms of such an agreement remained unclear.
The former president linked this news to the rise in diesel prices, emphasising that the current surge in prices is due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, rather than the situation with Iran, as many had assumed. Interestingly, Trump called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to halt strikes on Russian oil refineries, stating that this was having a negative impact on the global fuel market.
In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his willingness to discuss halting strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, provided that international partners can guarantee that Russia will refrain from attacking Ukrainian targets. Zelenskyy noted: “We expect concrete proposals from our partners,” making it clear that Ukraine is open to dialogue but needs real guarantees.
The reaction from Moscow was not long in coming. Vladimir Putin’s press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, welcomed Trump’s proposal as an important initiative, but sidestepped the question of whether Russia was prepared to take similar steps regarding Ukrainian infrastructure.
The context of these statements remains tense. Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, strikes on infrastructure targets have become part of both sides’ military strategy. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine regularly confirms such attacks, emphasising that they are aimed at reducing the enemy’s military capabilities and forcing Russia to cease its aggression.
Against the backdrop of these statements and proposals, one question remains unanswered: will the international community be able to facilitate a genuine agreement capable of stabilising the situation and influencing the global economic climate?
