Spain has already restored 99.95 per cent of its electricity supply after the blackout, energy company Red Electrica said Tuesday morning. According to the country’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, electricity is now flowing into Spain from France and Morocco.
Electricity also gradually returned to various municipalities in Portugal late in the evening of April 28, including the centre of Lisbon. Network operator REN reported that 85 out of 89 substations were back online.
The exact cause of the widespread blackout in Spain and Portugal is still unknown.
Sanchez said authorities are now searching for the cause. Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, for his part, believes the source of the blackout is “probably in Spain.” No signs of a cyberattack have been found, he said.
Portuguese energy company REN said the cause of the large-scale blackout in Spain, Portugal and France was extreme temperature changes.
A large-scale blackout occurred in Spain and Portugal on 28 April. According to media reports, electricity was also cut off in some areas of France and Andorra.
In the cities of Portugal and Spain stopped the underground, traffic lights did not work, there were interruptions in mobile communication and Internet.
Airports and hospitals used backup generators to supply electricity.
