Zhanna Nemtsova, the daughter of the prominent Russian politician Boris Nemtsov, has been placed on an international wanted list by the Russian authorities. At the end of July 2026, the Zamoskvoretsky District Court in Moscow ruled to arrest her in absentia on charges of establishing an undesirable organisation.
Although the court did not specify which organisation was in question, Nemtsova herself had previously stated that it could be the foundation named after her father, Boris Nemtsov. She established this foundation in Germany back in 2015. In April 2024, the Russian authorities declared its activities to be undesirable within the country.
But this is not the only organisation linked to Nemtsova’s name that has come under the scrutiny of the Russian authorities. In September 2026, the Russian Ministry of Justice added another of Nemtsova’s projects — the US-based ‘Foundation for Democracy and Liberal Values’ — to the list of undesirable organisations.
Boris Nemtsov’s name was widely known both in Russia and abroad. He was one of the most prominent leaders of the Russian opposition, and his murder in February 2015 came as a shock to many. Nemtsov was shot dead on the Bolshoi Moskvoretsky Bridge in Moscow, and it remains a mystery to this day who was behind the crime, as those who ordered the killing have never been found.
Following her father’s tragic death, Zhanna Nemtsova decided to leave Russia in the summer of 2015. Since then, she has been living abroad and continues to be involved in human rights and civic activism aimed at promoting democratic values.
