Scientists have recorded the first eruption of the Krasheninnikov volcano in Kamchatka in the history of observations. This was reported in the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The eruption began on August 3 at 04:50 (local time) with ash emissions to a height of up to four kilometres. KVERT noted that earlier the volcano eruption was recorded only in 1463.
In the Kronotsky reserve specified that the plume of ash reaches five-six kilometres, part of the territory is already covered with ash. At the same time, settlements were not affected – the plume passes far from residential areas, ash fallout in settlements was not recorded, reported the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kamensky Krai.
The eruption occurred shortly after a stronger for the region earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8, the epicentre of which was 200 kilometres south-east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. On 30 July, it was this earthquake that became the most powerful in Kamchatka since 1952.
Krasheninnikov Volcano, which belongs to the Eastern Volcanic Belt, is located about 13 kilometres south of Kronotsky Lake and 200 kilometres from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The absolute height of the volcano is 1,856 metres.
