A new row has erupted in diplomatic circles. South Korea has expressed its dissatisfaction with Ukraine over the disclosure of information regarding the transfer of North Korean prisoners of war to Seoul. This story, it would seem, began as a simple transaction, but has turned into an international scandal that now threatens relations between the two countries.
The crux of the conflict is this: the South Korean presidential administration accuses Kyiv of breaching a confidentiality agreement. According to Senior Presidential Secretary for Public Relations Song Ki-hong, the Ukrainian side was supposed to maintain confidentiality, but instead President Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly announced the transfer, which caused discontent in Seoul. Song Ki-hong emphasises that such behaviour has damaged trust between the countries and demands an apology from Ukraine.
However, as reported by the South Korean news agency Yonhap, the Ukrainian government had in fact initially insisted on confidentiality to avoid domestic criticism. The fact is that the handover of North Korean prisoners of war could have deprived Kyiv of the opportunity to exchange them for Ukrainian soldiers. South Korea agreed to carry out the operation in secret, taking into account the safety of the prisoners and their families.
Interestingly, the Ukrainian side has not yet responded to Seoul’s statements, leaving open the question of exactly how they intend to resolve this incident. Meanwhile, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung directly accused Zelenskyy of breaching the agreement, but in response, the Ukrainian leader’s office stated that the information regarding the handover had not been detailed and was of a general nature.
A whole tangle of contradictions has arisen surrounding two North Korean soldiers who were captured by the Ukrainian military in Russia’s Kursk Oblast. South Korean intelligence has confirmed this, adding that the prisoners’ conditions were harsh: one of them was left without food or water for several days. It is possible that this aspect served as the catalyst for the disclosure of the operation’s details.
