In the Canadian town of Belleville, on the evening of 20 September, an attack took place at the ‘Sons of Jacob’ synagogue. The tragic incident occurred just as the Jewish community had gathered for prayer to mark the holy day of Yom Kippur. Suddenly, an unidentified man opened fire at the entrance to the synagogue, which could have had catastrophic consequences had it not been for the intervention of a police officer on duty at the scene.
The brave officer managed to react in time and engage the attacker in a firefight. Upon hearing the gunshots, the worshippers immediately locked the doors and lay flat on the floor, which may well have saved their lives. The officer’s swift actions not only prevented a potential tragedy but also forced the attacker to retreat. However, during the shootout, both parties – the officer and the shooter – sustained serious injuries. They are currently in hospital, and their condition is described as extremely serious.
The chairman of the Belville Jewish community, Norman Veddum, expressed his gratitude to the brave police officer, noting that his actions had probably saved the lives of many people. He also emphasised that, given the threat of anti-Semitic attacks, such security measures are essential during major religious festivals.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a strong condemnation of the incident. He stated that the Jewish community has every right to practise their faith in safety and emphasised that the government would spare no effort to ensure justice is done. Carney promised that those responsible for this horrific act of violence would be brought to justice in full accordance with the law.
This incident reminds us of the importance of ensuring the safety of places of worship and of the need to combat acts of hatred and prejudice, which, unfortunately, continue to threaten communities around the world.
