Selection of books with a spring mood
1. “Traveller with new poems”, Ivan Malkovich
So why not start spring with poetry? Last year’s collection by writer and publisher Ivan Malkovich will take up very little space in your bag, is pleasant to the touch, and the spring colour of its cover speaks for itself. Most importantly, it is for this book that Malkovich recently received the Shevchenko Prize. It should and is advisable to familiarise yourself with it.
This book of selections by Ivan Malkovich (1961) includes poems from the collections White Stone (1984), The Key (1988), Poems (1992), With an Angel on My Shoulder (1997), Poems(2010), The Traveller (2013, 1st edition), as well as some of the newest poems.
2. “Violets in March,” Sarah Ghio
Writer Emily Wilson leaves New York City for Bainbridge Island. It’s a great opportunity to get over her divorce from her husband and a creative crisis. On the island she meets her long-time delight, Greg, and also meets Jack. Which of them she likes more – Emily can’t decide yet. The writer also finds the diary of her relative, from which she learns an ancient story.

3. “Cafe at the End of the World,” John P. Strelecki
Pause the daily hustle and bustle, break free from its nets, and stop by a cafe at the edge of the world. Unfold the menu and turn your attention to the last page with three questions you’ve been walking away from all your life. This book will help you in your search for answers.

4. “The City”, Valerian Pidmogilnyi
You may have known some of the books springing from this list since your school years, but re-reading them as an adult is useful. The plot of the novel “The City” develops around a young guy from the village, who goes to Kiev to study, develop and go out into the people. However, he meets a lot of situations that demonstrate the problem of different worldviews of the townspeople and peasants of that time.
Also the work can cause negative emotions, because throughout the plot Stepan makes different decisions, treats women unfairly and in him develops an internal conflict between good and evil, human and animal. However, the author and his works are noteworthy because they tell about the life of Ukrainians and the events of the beginning of the last century. They effectively describe cities and spring nature.

5. “Looking into your pupils”, Vasyl Simonenko
How well do you know Ukrainian poetry? We believe that well, but we suggest to dive even deeper together. Vasyl Simonenko is a representative of the “sixties”. His poems were out of print because of the Soviet ban, but teachers, farmers and ordinary people copied them and spread them around the world.
His collection of poems, I Look Into Your Pupils, is a classic piece of literature in the Ukrainian language, although it was recognised many years after the author’s death. Reading his poems now, you will be immersed in the atmosphere of love, joy, acceptance, dreaminess, hatred and sadness. Vasyl Simonenko’s works will make you fall in love with Ukrainian poetry and the collection will become your favourite.

Already today, on the 1st of March, a new spring season begins. No matter if the weather in your city is sunny and warm, or if the winter frosts are still lingering – make a spring and pleasant atmosphere at home with the help of music.
