The Taliban government in Afghanistan decided to “suspend” chess tournaments in the country, citing “religious considerations” and stating that chess is a form of “gambling”.
A Taliban spokesman said on 11 May that a decision on the possible resumption of chess permits would be made under the auspices of the country’s sports department, but gave no timeline.
Since returning to power in Afghanistan in August 2021, the Taliban have imposed a number of restrictions on sports and other cultural events. The Taliban are also regularly criticised for more serious human rights abuses, particularly the denial of the rights of women and girls.
