The Armenian government, led by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, has tendered its resignation. Pashinyan himself posted a video on his Telegram channel showing him signing a letter of resignation addressed to the President.
“In accordance with Article 158 of the Constitution of Armenia, the government resigns on the day of the first session of the National Assembly, and I am now preparing to sign the resignation,” says Pashinyan.
Parliamentary elections were held in Armenia on 7 June. By law, the current cabinet must step down following this. Pashinyan’s party, ‘Civic Contract’, won the election, securing over 49.7 per cent of the vote.
Until a new government is formed, members of the current cabinet will continue to carry out their duties. Once the new government takes office, the President, in accordance with the Armenian Constitution, must immediately appoint a new Prime Minister – a candidate nominated by the parliamentary majority.
