The Kremlin has commented on Trump’s statement regarding the elections in Ukraine and Zelenskyy’s position

In the world of diplomacy and international relations, it is rare to come across statements that do not spark a flurry of debate and interpretation. US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks were precisely such a case. Speaking to journalists on 10 October, he expressed the view that Ukraine needs a new president, which sparked a wave of reactions in both Kyiv and the Kremlin.

Commenting on this statement, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov noted that Zelenskyy bears the responsibility for making difficult decisions to end the war with Russia and, in Trump’s view, he is failing to rise to this challenge. Peskov also emphasised that, in his view, Zelenskyy has not yet demonstrated the necessary political will to resolve the conflict.

Trump made his statement shortly after a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which an agreement was reached on the supply of Russian diesel fuel to global markets. This added to the intrigue and sparked a new wave of speculation about possible behind-the-scenes negotiations between the US and Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, responding to Trump’s remarks, stated that the issue of a change of government in the country must be decided by the Ukrainian people. He emphasised that holding elections in the midst of war and constant shelling is difficult not only because of legislative restrictions, but also because of the need to ensure the safety of citizens.

Ukraine is prepared to organise elections if Russia ceases fire for at least 60 days. However, this condition seems unlikely, given the current tensions and the regular shelling to which Ukrainian territory is subjected.

Zelenskyy, who has held office since 2019, has now been in power for more than seven years, exceeding the maximum five-year presidential term in Ukraine. The imposition of martial law in 2022 temporarily prevents new elections from being held, which is also used as an argument for the stability of the government.

At the same time, analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) point out that the Kremlin continues to undermine the legitimacy of the Ukrainian government, paving the way for possible manipulation in the future. The Russian authorities regularly speak of the need to form a pro-Russian government in Ukraine.

These statements and the subsequent reactions from world leaders could have a significant impact on the further development of the conflict and international relations. What the next step will be remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the situation calls for a diplomatic approach and measured decisions.
