US President Donald Trump has congratulated Ukrainians on Independence Day. They emphasised that the USA supports the sovereignty of Ukraine.
The address of the US President was published by Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.
“The people of Ukraine have an indestructible spirit, and the courage of your country inspires many. On this important day, know that the United States respects your struggle, honours your sacrifices and believes in your future as an independent state,” Trump said.
According to him, “it is time to put an end to senseless killing.” Therefore, the US supports negotiating an agreement that “will lead to a strong, lasting peace, end the bloodshed and protect Ukraine’s sovereignty and dignity.”
Zelensky thanked Trump for the congratulations and noted that Ukraine and the US can end the war by working together.
“We appreciate your kind words for the Ukrainian people and thank the United States for standing side by side with Ukraine, defending the most precious things: independence, freedom and guaranteed peace,” he stressed.
On 24 August, Ukraine celebrates the 34th anniversary of its declaration of independence. The holiday was established in honour of the adoption by the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR on 24 August 1991 of the Act of Proclamation of Independence of Ukraine – a political and legal document that consolidated the new status of the state. This status was finally consolidated by a national referendum on 1 December 1991, when 90.32% of citizens supported independence.
