History of the Feast of the Transfer of the Non-Carrying Image of Jesus Christ
According to Sacred Tradition, after his baptism in the Jordan, Jesus performed many great miracles. The fame of Christ’s miracles reached Mesopotamia. King Abgar, who was seriously ill, sent his painter to Jesus, asking that the Lord would come to Edessa and cure him. If Jesus could not come, he asked that the artist at least paint his portrait.
The artist tried to paint Jesus, but could not because Jesus’ face shone with a powerful light. Then Jesus leaned the canvas against his face, which was miraculously reflected on it. The artist brought this image to Abgarova, who immediately recovered and converted his subjects to the faith of Christ.
Subsequently, he placed this image in the gates of Edessa so that people would venerate it. During the reign of the Greek Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus, the image, under which numerous miracles were performed, was solemnly transferred from Edessa to Tsargrad.
