The UAE has rejected Tehran’s plans to control the Strait of Hormuz

Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the president of the United Arab Emirates, has rejected the idea of Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz, advocating an international legal guarantee to ensure maritime security in the region.

In a 1 May post on social network X, Gargash said that the main guarantor of freedom of navigation through the strait is the collective international will and the provisions of international law. These, he said, should ensure the stability of the region and the world economy in the post-war period.

“No unilateral arrangements by Iran can be trusted or relied upon after its treacherous aggression against all its neighbours,” the diplomat and former UAE foreign minister added.

Gargash’s remarks came against the backdrop of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, adopted in March and backed by 136 countries, which condemned threats to close the Strait of Hormuz and affirmed that impeding freedom of navigation by this waterway poses a threat to international peace and security.

In recent days, Iranian officials have reiterated Tehran’s intention to control the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf reiterated Tehran’s intention to control the Strait of Hormuz.

In a post on social media X on the occasion of National Gulf Day, Qalibaf said that “by exercising control over the Strait of Hormuz, [Iran] will provide itself and its neighbours with the precious blessing of a future free from America’s presence and interference.”

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf had the previous day reaffirmed Tehran’s intention to control the Strait of Hormuz. He said Iran would “provide itself and its neighbours with the precious blessing of a future free from America’s presence and interference.”

Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global oil and gas supplies, to most international vessels, while the US Navy stops Iranian ships entering or leaving Iranian ports.

There have been reports that the US is considering a new Iranian proposal to end the war, in which Tehran would open the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping.
