Trump: refugees from Ukraine may stay in US until war ends

US President Donald Trump has said that refugees who left Ukraine because of the war will probably be able to stay in the United States until the war is over.

“I think they will. We have a lot of people who came from Ukraine. We’re working with them,” Trump told reporters in Washington, answering a question from a DW reporter, who subsequently circulated a related B X video.

In February 2025, the U.S. suspended the consideration of submitted immigration applications for a number of programmes, in particular” unity for Ukraine “(U4U). The US Department of Homeland Security explained this by the need for additional checks to prevent fraud and threats to national security.

In March this year, US President Donald Trump said he would soon decide whether he would revoke temporary legal status for some 240,000 displaced people from Ukraine. “We don’t want to hurt anybody’s school, we certainly don’t want to hurt them, and I’m considering it. There were some people who thought it was appropriate and some people who didn’t. And I will make a decision pretty soon,” the president told reporters in the Oval Office when asked about the status of Ukrainian migrants, Reuters reported.

In May, The Washington Post reported, citing documents, that President Donald Trump’s administration is likely planning a voluntary return home for refugees from various countries. The list of migrants also includes Ukrainians who took refuge in the US after the outbreak of a full-scale war. A spokeswoman for the US Department of Homeland Security acknowledged the authenticity of the documents, but stressed that the final decision had not been made yet.
