Roskomnadzor has blocked access to the Speedtest Internet connection speed and quality measurement service from the US company Ookla in Russia, Russian media reported.
The Russian supervisory agency explained this decision by “identified threats to the security of the public communications network and the Russian segment of the Internet”.
In June 2024, Roskomnadzor reported that its specialists had created their own programme to check the quality of communication on mobile devices, which was called ProNet.
The first reports that access to Speedtest could be blocked in Russia appeared in October 2024. At that time, Roskomnadzor said that this would happen “if it is found that the operation of the service poses a threat to the stability, security and integrity of the Internet and public communications networks in the Russian Federation”.
In October 2023, a court in Moscow fined the American company Ookla (owner of Speedtest) six million rubles for repeated refusal to localise data in Russia.
Over the past few months, mobile internet has been switched off in various regions of Russia amid massive attacks by Ukrainian drones.
