Trump: the deal the US seeks with Iran will be ‘much better’ than the nuclear deal

US President Donald Trump says the agreement the United States is negotiating with Iran will be far better than the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA – nuclear agreement), the 2015 international agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme from which he pulled the United States out during his first term.

In a series of Truth Social posts on April 20, in which he sharply criticised the US Democratic Party, former presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, and prominent US media outlets, Trump said he did not feel pressured to reach an agreement with Iran but predicted it would be reached soon enough.

“The deal we make with Iran will be much better than the JCPOA,” which he said, without providing details, “was a guaranteed path to nuclear weapons [for Iran].” In 2018, Trump pulled the United States out of the JCPOA, which limited Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for easing economic sanctions.

“If an agreement is made for the Trump administration, it will guarantee Peace, Security and Defence not only for Israel and the Middle East, but for Europe, America and anywhere else”,he declared.

Trump wrote, “I am under no pressure [to reach a new agreement with Iran], although it will all happen relatively quickly!”

Donald Trump also repeated previous arguments that the United States is winning the war with Iran, which began with US and Israeli airstrikes on 28 February. The ceasefire is in place until 22 April amid efforts to hold a second round of face-to-face talks between the US and Iran in Islamabad after an 11-12 April meeting that ended without an agreement.

He repeated what he has said in recent days: the US naval blockade of Iranian ports will remain in place “until an agreement is reached”. Tehran has said it will not participate in the talks if the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports remains in effect.
