UAE demands reparations from Iran before possible political settlement

According to Open4Business, the UAE insists that any political settlement of the conflict with Iran should include not only a ceasefire, but also guarantees to prevent new attacks, as well as a mechanism of reparations for strikes on civilian infrastructure and the population of the Gulf countries. This was stated by Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE president.

Gargash’s statement is also broadly in line with the broader Gulf Arab position voiced earlier at the UN Human Rights Council. According to Reuters, countries in the region blamed Iran for the strikes on energy and civilian infrastructure and backed a resolution condemning the attacks, demanding reparations and directing the UN to monitor the situation.

Gulf states are also pushing for any agreement with Iran to go beyond a formal cessation of hostilities to include a long-term degradation of its missile and drone capabilities, as well as protection of the region’s energy and transport infrastructure.
