Tensions between Washington and Moscow appear to have reached a new peak. The spotlight has fallen on the famous Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin, who appeared in a campaign advert for the Russian party ‘United Russia’. This has caused quite a stir in political and sporting circles in the US.
Republican Congressman Joe Wilson has sent an official letter to National Hockey League (NHL) Commissioner Gary Bettman, expressing serious concern over Ovechkin’s participation in the video. Wilson emphasised that the appearance of one of the NHL’s most famous ice hockey players in a political advertisement for a foreign political party calls into question the standards that players representing the league and their clubs should adhere to.
The advert, which caused such a stir, also featured high-ranking Russian figures alongside Ovechkin, including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and RT Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan. Lavrov, in particular, delivered a passionate speech on Russia’s defence, assuring that those who treat Russia fairly will always find common ground, whilst those who deceive will face the consequences.
Congressman Wilson questioned whether there are any NHL rules governing players’ involvement in political activities, particularly those relating to foreign states. He emphasised the importance of the NHL and the Washington Capitals making it clear that Ovechkin’s actions do not reflect the official position of either the league or the team.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time Alexander Ovechkin has demonstrated his political stance. In 2017, he announced the creation of the ‘Putin Team’ movement, and his Instagram account still features a photograph with Vladimir Putin, reflecting his long-standing support for the Russian leader.
Ovechkin’s appearance in the ‘United Russia’ advert raises important questions about the limits of political activity by high-profile sportspeople, particularly when it comes to players representing international sporting organisations. Whilst the NHL and the Washington Capitals remain silent, tensions surrounding this story continue to mount.
