Vance says ball is on Iran’s side after ‘progress’ in Islamabad talks

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance said the ball is now on Iran’s side after peace talks in Islamabad over the weekend made “significant progress.”

In an interview with Fox News on 13 April, Vance said that during the peace talks, which lasted about 20 hours, “we clearly defined our red lines.”

“I really believe the ball is on Iran’s side because we put a lot of things on the table,” Vance said.

He added that the talks made it clear that US President Donald Trump has no flexibility on Iran’s enriched uranium, which should be in Washington, and a verification mechanism that will ensure Tehran does not develop nuclear weapons in the future.

“It’s one thing when the Iranians say they will not have nuclear weapons. It’s another thing when we put in place a mechanism to ensure that doesn’t happen,” Vance said.

Talks between US and Iranian representatives in Islamabad on 11 April ended in failure as the sides failed to reach agreement on several key issues. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance said Iran’s nuclear ambitions were a major obstacle.

Iranian officials have signalled that they may be open to upcoming talks, but blamed the Americans for the breakdown of the talks.
