This day is considered to be the scariest of the year. According to belief, on the night of 1 November, evil forces walk the earth and you need to protect yourself and your home from them.
According to an Irish legend, once a farmer named Jack managed to trick the devil into promising not to take his soul to hell after death. But Jack was not allowed into heaven for his sins, so the devil threw him a smouldering coal from the fires of hell to light his way.
Jack put the coal in his reputation so that it would not go out. But the sinner himself could not find a place – so Jack’s lamp became a symbol of an untamed soul wandering in darkness.
What is forbidden to do on the holiday
- It is necessary to close all windows and doors – through them the evil force can get into the house;
- You must not leave laundry to dry on a rope – an evil spirit can get into it;
- Do not kill spiders – they are connected with the souls of the dead and warn of danger;
- You must not refuse help and alms to those who ask for it;
- on the evening of the holiday you must not leave a black cat at home – it can bring bad luck to the house;
- You must not turn round if you hear footsteps behind you –He who turns round may lose his senses.
- You can’t be alone. Loneliness is vulnerability, and on Halloween night, otherworldly forces can take advantage of that.
Halloween omens.
-
A pumpkin with a candle inside at the entrance is the main hedge against evil.
-
Spiders are the spirits of the dead who warn of danger, so never kill them.
-
The candle has gone out. If the candles lit in the house are constantly going out, it may be a sign that evil spirits or evil forces are roaming around.
-
Bats. A bat circling around the house is considered a good sign of a good harvest or a good year.
