WSJ: US told Iran that strikes on its facilities were a one-off operation

The Wall Street Journal quoted a senior White House official as saying that the United States informed Iran that the strikes on its nuclear facilities were an isolated action and not the start of a campaign to change the government.

According to the interlocutor of the publication, Washington through Arab countries informed Tehran about the cessation of attacks.

On 19 June, US President Donald Trump said he would give Tehran two weeks to make a deal with Washington before ordering an attack. In doing so, Trump approved a strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities two days later.

“The goal was to create a situation where no one expected it,” the source said.

In addition, through mediators, the US side called on Iran to resume negotiations on its nuclear programme.

At the same time, as the newspaper notes, the Gulf countries are preparing for a possible escalation of the conflict. Iran’s foreign minister said the US and Israeli strikes have made negotiations on the nuclear deal impossible. US President Donald Trump in his address to the country allowed the implementation of new strikes on Iran if Tehran does not agree to negotiations.

The US military attacked three key sites of Iran’s nuclear programme – in Fordow, Natang and Isfahan – on the night of June 22. Iranian authorities confirmed the attacks on the sites and said the Fordow facility had been evacuated due to the high probability of strikes. There is no independent confirmation yet of the extent of the destruction at Iran’s nuclear facilities following the strike.
