A 250-kilogramme aerial bomb found in a forest in eastern Estonia

On Sunday, 2 November, an aerial bomb discovered in a forest near the Russian border will be defused near the village of Auvere (Ida-Võru County), the Estonian Rescue Service said.

Local residents were warned about possible loud explosions.

According to the service, at 08:30am the emergency call centre received a report from a man who came across a “large explosive object” while walking in the forest. The bomb squad arrived on the scene and determined that it was a 250kg aerial bomb.

The rescue service urged residents of Auvere and surrounding areas to remain calm in case they hear loud noises or explosions.

According to the rescue service, all work was carried out in compliance with “necessary safety rules”.

Earlier, the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) said that it had closed the passage through the so-called “Saatse boot” – a protrusion of Russian territory, which runs through the territory of the village of Saapse. On 11 October, local media reported, citing the PPA, that Estonian border guards had noticed the movement of a larger-than-usual squad on the Russian side of the border.

According to the police, the road, which partly passes through the Russian Pskov region, was closed to prevent possible provocations and incidents, as well as to ensure the safety of Estonian residents.
