Long and complex negotiations took place in Minsk, which appear to have finally begun to bear fruit. The United States and Belarus have reached a provisional agreement under which 25 Belarusian prisoners are to be released in the near future, whilst the US has promised to lift sanctions on two Belarusian companies — ‘Lakafarb’ and ‘Bellespaperapram’. This was announced by John Cole, the US President’s Special Envoy for Belarus, following the conclusion of the meetings.
The visit by US representatives, including Christopher Panico from the State Department, was not merely another diplomatic formality. It marked a step towards more peaceful cooperation between the two countries. The talks, which were also attended by high-ranking Belarusian officials such as Prime Minister Alexander Turchin and KGB Chairman Ivan Tertel, were intended to address a number of complex issues, including the release of political prisoners.
However, Alexander Lukashenko, the Belarusian leader, once again denied the existence of political persecution in the country, claiming that the situation was under control and that the repression was nothing more than rumours spread by ‘fugitives’. Nevertheless, the human rights centre “Viasna” insists that politically motivated arrests and trials are still taking place in the republic, and that there are currently 912 people recognised as political prisoners in Belarus.
John Cole, viewing the current progress with optimism, noted on social media that the release of 25 prisoners is only the beginning. He thanked President Lukashenko for this step and expressed confidence that relations between the two countries would continue to improve. The US is also grateful to Lithuania for its assistance in this process.
It appears that the negotiation process is not yet complete, and the parties intend to continue the dialogue. As Cole stated, there is still much work to be done, but there is hope that further efforts will lead to the release of even more people and closer economic ties between the United States and Belarus.
