European ministers postpone meeting in Cyprus over drone attack

An informal meeting of the European Union’s General Affairs Council scheduled for 2 March has been postponed after a drone incident at the British military base in Akrotir in Cyprus. This was announced by the Cypriot Presidency of the EU Council, Radio Liberty’s correspondent in Brussels reports.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight at the Akrotiri base, where the drone “caused minor damage,” according to the Cypriot government speaker.

Because of this unpredictable development, which affected air traffic with Cyprus, the presidency decided to postpone the informal meeting of the Rada to a later date. It has not been announced yet.

“The competent authorities immediately activated the stipulated security protocols and are closely monitoring the situation in constant coordination with the UK government and the British bases administration”, the statement said.

According to Radio Liberty, progress on technical work on Ukraine’s EU membership was expected at this meeting. In particular, the participants should move forward with three more negotiation clusters in addition to the first three, which were presented in December 2025 in Lviv.

The day before, UK Defence Secretary John Gili said that “retaliatory Iranian indiscriminate attacks” against US-Israeli strikes included “two ballistic missiles fired towards Cyprus”.

On the morning of 28 February, the Israeli military struck Iranian territory. Hours after Israel announced what it called a “pre-emptive strike”, US President Donald Trump said Washington had launched “major combat operations” against Iran.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps responded to the US and Israeli strikes by launching several waves of drones and ballistic missiles at Israel. Iran has also launched missiles at several Middle Eastern countries where US military bases are located. Explosions were reported in Bahrain, UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
