German inflation accelerated to 2.1% in January

Consumer prices in Germany, harmonised with European Union standards, rose by 2.1% year-on-year in January, according to final data from the country’s Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

Inflation accelerated from 2 per cent in December, when the rate was the lowest in five months.

The January figure matched both preliminary data and forecasts by analysts surveyed by Trading Economics.

Compared with December, consumer prices fell 0.1 per cent last month.

Prices calculated using German standards rose 2.1 per cent year-on-year in January and were up 0.1 per cent from the previous month. Both figures were also in line with previous data and expert expectations.

The increase in the cost of services slowed to 3.2 per cent from 3.5 per cent in December, while goods prices accelerated to 1 per cent from 0.4 per cent. Energy prices fell by 1.7% (-1.3% in December), while food prices rose by 2.1% (+0.8%).

Prices excluding food and energy rose by 2.5% in January after rising by 2.4% in December.
