Iran’s foreign ministry urged the US to abandon “excessive demands”

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Bakaei called on the United States to drop its “excessive demands” to allow peace talks between the two countries to move forward.

“At this stage, our priority is to end the war,” Bakaei said at a briefing on 4 May, which was broadcast by state television.

“The other side should take a reasonable approach and drop its excessive demands on Iran,” he added.

The spokesman did not give details on what Tehran considers excessive demands.

A day earlier, Tehran said it had received a response from Washington to its latest peace offer, which Iran had earlier handed over to Pakistan, which mediated the talks between the two countries.

US President Donald Trump said without elaboration that he was likely to reject the Iranian offer because “they haven’t paid a big enough price”.

A truce has been in place between Iran and the US since early April. But talks between the sides have stalled: they have been unable to agree on any significant issue in the conflict, including Iran’s nuclear programme and free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
