At least 12 US servicemen were injured, two of them seriously, in an Iranian strike on Saudi Arabia, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal reported on 28 March, citing unnamed officials.
Tehran attacked Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia with at least one missile and several drones, according to the journalists.
Soldiers were inside a building at the base when it was hit. Several aerial refuelling planes were also damaged.
The Pentagon and US Central Command have not yet commented on the situation.
At the same time, Yemen’s Houthi rebels launched their first rockets at Israel since the start of the current war in the Middle East. This threatens to widen the conflict, which is now in its fifth week.
Iran continues to strike Persian attack countries, which it accuses the US of using as a launching pad for strikes in a joint operation with Israel on 28 February.
Since the conflict began, 13 Americans have been killed – seven in the Persian Gulf and six in Iraq – and more than 300 others have been wounded. U.S. commanders said 273 of them have already returned to the military.
28 February The US launched a joint military operation with Israel against Iran. The strikes killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and hit the country’s military and nuclear facilities. Iran retaliated by striking US bases and infrastructure of Washington’s Gulf allies.
Since the launch of the operation, Iran has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the world’s oceans. The Strait is of strategic importance because it is the route through which oil from the oil-producing countries of the Persian Gulf flows to the world market.
