The Moldovan government has confirmed the agreement on the transit of Ukrainian goods, noting that it is “economically beneficial to both sides”.
The government stated that Ukraine could reroute around 10 per cent of its grain exports, estimated at 6 million tonnes in 2026, via Moldova.
“Our country has set itself the goal of attracting a significant proportion of this volume (of Ukrainian agricultural exports – ed.), which is estimated at around 10 per cent of the total, and has therefore offered a 50 per cent discount on transit through Moldovan territory. Offering such discounts is standard practice for attracting large volumes of transit traffic,” said Government Spokesperson Dumitru Choric.
According to him, the agreed volumes will generate profit for the Moldovan Railways (CFM), and “the potential opportunities for CFM are estimated at several million euros”.
The Moldovan government has confirmed that the new scheme will come into effect on request – from 10 August until the end of 2026.
Similarly, from 10 August, there has also been a change for passengers travelling by train on the Kyiv–Chișinău route: it runs daily, on a provisional timetable, but now makes two stops: one at Chisinau railway station and the other at Revaca station (near Chisinau International Airport – ed.), added Chorich.
The day before, Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi announced an agreement with his Moldovan counterpart, Vasile Tofan, on a 50 per cent discount on transit rail transport for Ukrainian goods. According to him, the new arrangement is in force from 10 August until the end of 2026.
Furthermore, according to Koretsky, from 17 August, following an agreement between the two countries, the route of the Kyiv–Chisinau train will be changed.
