NATO condemns ‘Russia’s irresponsibility’ after drone hit in Romania

Emergency services reported that two people needed medical attention and that the fire was extinguished. 70 people were evacuated.

Romania’s defence ministry also said it had put two F-16 fighter jets and a military helicopter in the air for surveillance during the Russian attack on Ukraine, adding that the pilots had permission to shoot down the drones.

Russian Federation officials have not yet commented on the incident.

Romania, a member of NATO and the European Union, shares more than 600 kilometres of land border with Ukraine. Since the start of Russian strikes on ports in southern Ukraine, Romanian authorities have repeatedly reported Russian drones flying into the country’s airspace. However, on 29 May, a drone flew into a house in Romania for the first time and injured people.

The incident occurred against the backdrop of an escalating security situation in Europe and concerns that Russia’s war against Ukraine could spill over into the EU.
