Refugee truck overturns in Afghanistan: 18 people killed, 35 others injured

At least 18 people were killed and 35 injured in an accident involving a truck carrying Afghan refugees returning from Pakistan in Afghanistan, said Abdul Malik Niyazi, spokesman for the governor of Eastern Laghman Province.

The accident occurred May 30 morning on the Kabul-Jalalabad Highway, he said. A lorry carrying people overturned for unspecified reasons.

A Taliban spokesman in Laghman province also confirmed the incident on Facebook.

Among the dead and injured, the vast majority are women and children, local authorities said. The circumstances of the accident are being investigated. Authorities did not provide further details on the cause of the accident or the condition of the injured.
