At least 40 people, including soldiers and civilians, have been killed in a US operation in Venezuela, The New York Times reported, citing a senior Venezuelan official who spoke on condition of anonymity. It was not officially reported.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that no US servicemen had been killed, but there were several wounded.
150 US aircraft were involved in the operation. According to US media, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was able to be captured with the help of a CIA source close to his administration, which had been monitoring his location in recent days.
In January, Maduro, who was captured along with his wife Celia Flores in a US operation, was taken to New York to face drug trafficking charges. Maduro and Flores are currently in custody.
A federal judge in New York released a new indictment charging Maduro, his wife and four others with four counts, including “narco-terrorism” and conspiracy to import cocaine.
Hours after the operation, Trump said the US would govern Venezuela until there is an orderly transfer of power. He did not specify exactly how that would take place.
