Pantsir air defence system installed on a skyscraper in the centre of Moscow

The Russian capital Moscow has installed a Pantsir air defence system on a skyscraper in the city centre.

According to the Russian service of Radio Liberty, a video shot by an eyewitness showing the air defence system being lowered onto the roof of the building was published on social network X.

The video shows a helicopter lowering a super short-range Pantsir-SMD-E anti-aircraft missile system onto the roof of a building (its height exceeds 171 metres).

The installation of Pantsirs on the roofs of buildings in Moscow in 2023 began the saturation of the Russian capital with air defence systems to protect it from Ukrainian drones. Since then, almost all such SAMs have been removed from rooftops, except for one Pantsir, which still stands on the Russian Defence Ministry headquarters building.

In total, Radio Liberty estimates that Moscow has been surrounded by more than 100 air defence systems, mostly Pantsir-S1s on special towers and catwalks, since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Earlier this month, the Russian capital was subjected to one of the largest Ukrainian attacks ever in Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian drones managed to hit several sensitive targets, notably the Moscow oil refinery and an oil loading station near Solnechnogorsk.
