Romania’s parliament on Monday voted in favour of a new pro-European coalition government.
The government headed by Ilie Bolojan was backed by 301 parliamentarians. A majority of 233 votes was required for approval.
Following the swearing-in ceremony at the Cotroceni Palace of the presence of President Nicusor Dan, executive ministers led by Ilieu Bolojan attended the first cabinet meeting on Monday evening.
The prime minister said that the completion of the parliamentary procedure and the swearing-in of the new government ends “the period of instability and temporary leadership of Romania’s main institutions”.
“We now have a government that is based on a significant parliamentary majority. Starting tonight, we will demonstrate our loyalty, our efficiency and our responsibility in the service of Romania,” Bolhogan said.
Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan’s centrist National Liberal Party (PNL) government was joined by the Social Democrats (PSD), the liberal-conservative Save Romania Union (USR), the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR/UMDSZ) and parties of other ethnic groups.
The coalition agreement foresees a rotating prime ministerial position between the PNL (June 2025-April 2027) and PSD (April 2027-December 2028), a balanced distribution of 16 ministries among the coalition parties, and 34 governance priorities.
Romanian President Nicusor Dan 20 June announced that he had chosen Ilie Bolojan, leader of the Liberal Party, as the country’s prime ministerial candidate.
Romania’s centrist, pro-European and pro-Ukrainian mayor of Bucharest, Nicusor Dan, won the second round of the repeat presidential election on 18 May. he received 53.6% of the vote, while far-right candidate George Simion received 46.4%.
