The future of 6G: Samsung achieves 3Gbps in 7GHz tests

Samsung has just announced that it has successfully completed testing of an important technology that is considered to be the backbone of the future 6G network. For those who don’t know, Samsung also researches and develops telecoms networking equipment, not just smartphones.

Samsung has partnered with KT Corporation to complete trials of eXtreme multiple-input multiple-output (X-MIMO) technology in the 7 GHz band. By utilising an ultra-high density antenna system, they achieved a peak download speed of 3 Gbps. The above system includes four times as many antennas without increasing the physical size of the equipment. It is about the same size as previous generations.

X-MIMO is considered the backbone of 6G networks because the 7 GHz band is currently considered the best solution for 6G networks. It provides a good balance between bandwidth and coverage and is still in the millimetre-wave range.

The researchers transmitted eight data streams from the base station to the user’s device, utilising KT’s expertise in recreating realistic outdoor network conditions.

Of course, 6G is still a long way off, but Samsung is clearly on the right track to pioneer the development of a next-generation mobile network.
