The Kremlin said US negotiators are on their way to Russia, where they have contacts planned with the Russian side.
“Indeed, the negotiators are flying and, indeed, contacts are planned. We will not get ahead of ourselves, we will tell you later,” Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in response to a request to comment on US President Donald Trump’s remarks that his negotiators were heading to Russia.
In addition, Peskov said Putin had an “international phone conversation” scheduled for Thursday evening.
US President Donald Trump said earlier that representatives of the United States were heading to Russia on 12 March for talks on a possible ceasefire with Ukraine after Kiev agreed to a 30-day truce. Trump did not specify who was on the negotiating team, but said he hoped they would be able to secure a ceasefire from Russia.
Vice President J.D. Vance, who was also at the meeting, added that “there will be phone and in-person conversations with some of our representatives over the next few days.”
Trump did not say when he would next speak with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, but expressed hope “that he will go for a truce.”
On 11 March, delegations from Ukraine and the United States met in Saudi Arabia.
During the talks, Ukraine agreed to the proposal of the US side to impose a ceasefire in the war with Russia for 30 days. The delegations also discussed the importance of humanitarian efforts as part of the peace process, particularly during the ceasefire, including the exchange of prisoners of war, the release of held civilians and the return of forcibly displaced Ukrainian children.
US President Donald Trump said that US and Russian representatives would later meet to discuss the ceasefire.
Also, the US president’s national security adviser, Mike Volz, said that Donald Trump had decided to immediately resume military and intelligence assistance to Ukraine following the US-Ukrainian talks.
The Kremlin said that it was studying the statements made following the meeting of the Ukrainian and US delegations in Jeddah.
