US President Donald Trump has said that Iran is “determined” to make a deal, but that at the moment Washington is “not satisfied” with the deal currently being worked on.
“They are very eager to make a deal. So far they haven’t succeeded. We’re not happy with it,” Trump said at the opening of a cabinet meeting in Washington on 27 May.
“But we’re going to be happy with it. We will be. Either that or we’re just going to have to wrap things up,” he added, likely referring to a resumption of hostilities.
Trump also said Iran’s decision to partially restore internet access to its citizens after an unprecedented 88-day shutdown is a sign that the country is seeking a peace deal.
“I think they just want to make a deal. I don’t think they have a choice. They’re just going back online because they’re suffering a crushing defeat. Their economy is in free fall,” he said.
Earlier, Iranian state television reported that the draft agreement with the United States includes a commitment to lift the U.S. naval blockade of Iran, restore commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and reduce the U.S. military presence in the Persian Gulf region. The White House said the report was “false”.
