In a dramatic turn of events, US President Donald Trump announced that Iran had established direct contact with Washington, hinting at Tehran’s desire to reach an agreement. This news came against the backdrop of a protracted conflict that has been ongoing for seven months and, according to Trump, may be drawing to a close.
Whilst in North Carolina, Trump told journalists he was hopeful that the war would soon end and emphasised that Iran wanted to strike a deal. However, he did not elaborate on the details of these talks, failing to specify how Iran had expressed its desire or who exactly was conducting the negotiations. Iranian officials have also not confirmed this information.
At a campaign rally in Gastonia, the president added that the conflict could end ‘very well’, hinting at possible changes following the US mid-term elections in November. Vice-President J.D. Vance backed his leader, stating that in the coming months the war could enter “a fundamentally different phase”. However, he too left us in the dark as to what exactly this might mean: a reduction in the intensity of hostilities, an escalation, or a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
These optimistic statements came against the backdrop of a strongly worded address by Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. On 14 September, Rezaei stated that Tehran would not discuss any issues with the US until its conditions were met.
Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Trump is expected to meet with leaders of the Arab Gulf states to discuss a post-war strategy towards Iran. Whilst this plan has not yet been confirmed by the White House, keen interest in the event has already been sparked.
