US President Donald Trump said in an interview with Fox News on 28 July that ‘good’ talks had taken place with Iran, but warned that if Tehran did not reach an agreement, the United States may have to launch further strikes against civilian infrastructure.
A few hours before his scheduled meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump said that the United States was currently in a “very strong position”, although he would prefer to avoid further bombing of Iran.
“We can no longer allow them to violate the agreements… We have had very good talks,” he said.
The US President said he had seen reports of satellite images which appear to indicate that Iran is stepping up work at a secret nuclear facility deep beneath Mount Kuh-e Kolang, also known as ‘Mount Piquex (Kirk)’.
Intelligence agencies suspect that this is where Iran is seeking to build a secret uranium enrichment facility.
“I know exactly what’s going on at ‘Pikex’. It’s not a big problem. We’ve destroyed their nuclear facilities, and we’ll have to destroy ‘Pikex’ if we don’t reach a deal. If we don’t reach a deal, we’ll destroy it very easily,” said Trump.
During its latest campaign against Iran, the US carried out strikes for 13 consecutive nights on targets in the south of the country. The Iranian government stated that more than 350 civil servants were killed during the recent attacks. Iran’s Ministry of Roads and Urban Development stated that 12 bridges and two tunnels were damaged during the US campaign.
