Washington has put forward five conditions for Iran to move to the second round of peace talks, the Fars news agency reported.
The US demands that Tehran give up any claims for compensation from Washington, hand over 400 kilograms of enriched uranium to the US and keep only one nuclear complex operational. In addition, the US side is not ready to unfreeze even 25 per cent of Iranian assets and ties the cessation of hostilities in other countries to the progress of negotiations.
Fulfilment of these demands does not guarantee the US and Israel’s refusal to launch new strikes against Iran, Fars notes.
Earlier, Iran also put forward its five conditions for the resumption of talks. Tehran demands an end to the war, especially in Lebanon, lifting of sanctions, unfreezing of assets, compensation for losses and recognition of Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.
In early May, Iran handed over a 14-point peace plan to the US. It included a cessation of hostilities, non-aggression guarantees, lifting the naval blockade and withdrawal of U.S. troops from the region.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the main point of contention remains Iran’s nuclear programme. The US insists on immediate commitments to limit nuclear infrastructure and uranium stockpiles, in return Tehran offers to discuss this separately within 30 days.
US President Donald Trump earlier called Iran’s proposals unacceptable. Tehran said the US president’s reaction was irrelevant.
