World War II-era aerial bomb found in Germany, people evacuated

About 30,000 people have been evacuated from the German city of Pforzheim after an unexploded World War II-era aerial bomb was found, police said on 17 May.

According to local authorities, the bomb weighing 1.8 tonnes was found during construction work in the eastern part of the city, located about 40 kilometres northwest of Stuttgart.

It is an HC-4000 type aerial bomb, which contains approximately 1.35 tonnes of explosive material. It is planned to be defused in the near future.

Police said rescuers are checking whether all residents have left the evacuation zone with a radius of 1.5 kilometres. Part of the city centre has fallen into the zone of restrictions, the work of public transport has also been disrupted.

The city administration said earlier that the bomb posed no “immediate threat” to the population.

Unexploded ordnance from the Second World War is still regularly found in Germany, although more than 80 years have passed since its end.
