US cancels temporary status for more than 530,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela

The US Department of Homeland Security announced the cancellation of temporary status for more than 530 thousand citizens of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela, who arrived in the US under the humanitarian password programme of the Biden administration. This is stated in a message published in the official register of the United States and signed by the head of the agency Kristi Noah.

It is about the end of the two-year programme “CHNV parole”, which since October 2022 allowed citizens of these countries who arrived in the United States to obtain temporary residence and work permits. The new executive order calls for the loss of this status as early as 24 April.

Those who have no other legal grounds for staying in the country will have to leave before that date.

The agency emphasised that the “CHNV parole” is a purely temporary mechanism and does not entitle to permanent migration status.

The humanitarian parole programme for Venezuelans was launched by Biden in 2022, and in 2023 it was extended to citizens of Cuba, Haiti and Nicaragua. It has become one of the tools to reduce illegal migration at the border with Mexico.

Earlier, on 6 March, Reuters, citing a senior Trump official and three sources familiar with the matter, reported that the administration of US President Donald Trump plans to cancel Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for about 240,000 Ukrainian refugees. According to the sources, this could happen as early as April.

The planned rollback of protection for Ukrainians was reportedly taking place before the spat between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Trump last week. The sources said it was part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to strip legal status from more than 1.8 million migrants who are allowed to enter the USA under temporary humanitarian programmes.

US Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin previously said the agency had no announcements at this time.

Trump’s executive order, issued on January 20, called on the Department of Homeland Security to suspend refugee admission programmes. Form I-134a has been discontinued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services for all asylum seekers.
