In Russia, the Zamoskvoretsky District Court in Moscow has ordered the arrest in absentia of Zhanna Nemtsova – the daughter of the murdered opposition politician Boris Nemtsov. This took place in a criminal case concerning the organisation of the activities of a so-called ‘undesirable organisation’, the press office of Moscow’s courts of general jurisdiction reported on 31 July.
The court imposed a pre-trial detention order on Nemtsova for a period of two months. This period will begin from the time of Nemtsova’s extradition to Russia or from the moment of her arrest within the country.
The court’s statement does not specify which organisation’s activities the criminal case relates to. In April 2024, the Russian authorities designated the Boris Nemtsov Foundation – of which the politician’s daughter is a co-founder – as an undesirable organisation.
The Bonn-based Nemtsov Foundation is involved in educational, cultural and expert projects aimed at supporting democratic initiatives, civil society and independent journalism. Its activities are banned in Russia following its inclusion on the register of undesirable organisations.
