EU says coordination needed on peace plan for Ukraine

During the leaders’ meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit on 22 November, European Council President António Costa noted the importance of a “coherent and focused approach of partner countries in working towards peace in Ukraine”.

According to him, the main goal remains “unchanged” – to support Ukraine on the way to a “just and lasting peace”. For this, the official stressed, it is necessary to “maintain close co-operation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy”.

The EU noted that the US draft 28-point peace plan contained important provisions that could become the basis for achieving sustainable peace. At the same time, Brussels noted that the document needed to be finalised, in particular because some of its clauses relate exclusively to the EU competence and should be agreed within the union.

The draft plan will now be handed over for elaboration at the working level.

At the same time, President Costa invited all 27 EU leaders to a special meeting on Ukraine to be held on 24 November on the margins of the EU-African Union summit in Luanda.

The peace plan prepared in the administration of US President Donald Trump proposes, among other things, that Ukraine actually surrender Donbass and halve the number of the AFU.

Western publications reported that the plan was prepared with the participation of Russian representatives. Europe and Ukraine were not involved in the development of the plan. The Trump administration is putting strong pressure on the Ukrainian authorities, expecting Kiev to agree to approve the peace plan in the next few days, the Financial Times reported, citing sources.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky received a copy of the plan and said he was ready to work with the US on it. His office emphasised that Kiev and Washington had agreed to “work on the points of the plan in a way that will lead to a dignified end to the war”.

The Kremlin is ready to negotiate the end of the war with Ukraine but is not discussing any peace plan so far, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitriy Peskov has said.
