- In the church calendar the feast is called the day of the seven martyrs of the Maccabees, their mother Solomonia and their teacher Eleazar, who in 166 BC were martyred by the Syrian king Antiochus Epiphanes for their faith in God. In Orthodox tradition, the Maccabees are personified as a symbol of steadfastness in keeping the Christian commandments.
The seven holy martyrs of the Maccabees gave their lives in the name of the Divine will. They preferred to accept a terrible death, but not to despise the precepts of hosts. This demonstrates that a person who is led by a higher power is able to overcome all obstacles and hardships, rise above the material world and reach the heavenly kingdom.
Besides, tradition says that the hope of resurrection existed even before the coming of the Saviour. This feeling gives meekness and humility, comforts in difficult times, and relieves anger, longing, sadness, apathy, and fear. It means that even in the depths of despair one should hope in the Creator – He will help in any trouble.
The memory of the righteous is commemorated on 14 August O.S., coinciding with the solemnity of the Origin of the Honourable Arms of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord (in everyday life it is called the Honey Saviour), the beginning of the Dormition fast and the date of the baptism of Kievan Rus by Prince Vladimir.
On this day they serve the liturgy in special dark red clothes, read special verses, consecrate water and bee products. The ritual treats – sweet buns korshuns and pancakes with poppy seeds – are prepared without fail.
What should not be done on this day
1. There is a strict ban on noisy parties and loud conversations.
2. It is forbidden to do cleaning or heavy work.
3. Also on Makoway it is forbidden to quarrel and find out about relationships.
4. In the Honey Saviour you should not wish evil to anyone, even to your enemies, because it can return to you a hundredfold.
5. Since this day is the beginning of the Dormition fast, there are quite severe restrictions on food. It is allowed to eat only uncooked vegetable food – raw fruits and vegetables, dried fruits, nuts, honey, and bread.
