Argentina is preparing to launch a programme that will allow foreigners to obtain citizenship in exchange for investment, the Financial Times reports, citing sources.
According to the publication, two options are being considered: a non-refundable donation of around $500,000 or the purchase of government bonds worth $1 million. The terms of the programme have not yet been finalised and are subject to change.
As the FT notes, the authorities hope the programme will help raise funds to service the national debt. Should it go ahead, Argentina will become one of the world’s largest countries to offer so-called ‘golden passports’ in exchange for investment.
Argentinian citizenship grants visa-free entry to almost 170 countries. Following the outbreak of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, Argentina became a popular destination for Russian emigrants. In 2025, the authorities tightened immigration legislation, which, according to the FT, was linked in part to preparations for the new investment programme.
